The Memory Grove Shoot

Recently, its many colorful and photogenic options brought me back to Memory Grove to capture some shots of the Pohlsander family. One of the biggest challenges of portrait photography is trying to capture the personality of the subject; it is something that I am always trying to improve. With the Pohlsanders, I think that their personalities really come out in some of the following images. Thanks guys!

The Wheeler Farm Shoot

I had done a photo shoot at Wheeler Farm before but I have always wanted to go back. It has so many different things to work with that I often get overwhelmed and have a hard time deciding where to shoot; which I don't think is the worst problem to have at a location. With our limited time, Justin and Stephanie followed me through a maze of other photographers and families looking for the petting zoo while simultaneously dodging tracker rides. In the end, I am pretty happy with how they turned out. Thanks guys for your creativity and for putting up with me. Oh, and happy anniversary!

Sometimes rainstorms threaten photo shoots, sometimes daylight seems to disappear much faster than normal and sometimes on the way to a shoot, entire highways become parking lots. Despite the odds however, I am still met with optimistic smiling faces. I can't tell you much about other photographer's clients, but I can say that somehow, I always get the good ones.

This last weekend, I had the opportunity to meet up with and capture the many generations Ron and Sandy Page. I had a great time working with them. I thought I could share just a few of my favorite shots from our session.

Those who are experienced summertime weekenders know that there is nothing better than a good art festival. This past weekend's annual Chalk Art Festival was no different. The good news is, as a journalism student, I got to cover it!

If you went, you got to see some amazing local artists in the midst of their work. If you didn't, I did you a favor. That's right, I arrived prepared to capture some chalk manipulation goodness. Enjoy...

The Chalk Art Festival is hosted by the Utah Foster Care Foundation. Its purpose is to create awareness of the need for more foster parents in Utah. During the family friendly, 2-day event you can find many information tables along side the seemingly never ending stretch of chalk art. This is designed to give visitors more information about how this foundation funds, trains and supports foster families who open their homes to children in need.

"I think that there is no better way that you can learn empathy and be able to help preserve a family", says Heidi Naylor, Foster parent of 5 years and Utah Foster Care Volunteer. "If I do nothing else in my life but this, I know that I have made a difference."

As children with painted faces run around us, the sounds of Harry Potter music play in the background and art lovers from all over Utah surround us, Naylor, form behind a volunteer booth, shared with me her need to give back to the children:

"My life has been so blessed by the opportunity to have these children in my home," she said.

"I get blessings form those experiences everyday and I feel like I need to do something more to help them."

In response to those who may be considering becoming foster parents, Liz Rivera, the Salt Lake Regional Trainer, says, "Just do it. People always worry that they aren't ready, that they don't have the skills but in fact, to those who have the desire, we just recommend to go ahead and jump in."

Fortunately, the goal of the awareness campaign proved successful. Deborah Lindner, the Event Organizer said in a follow up interview on Monday, "Yes, I think that we were definitely successful. With an attendance of over a 20,000 people we were able to pass out a lot of information and find more people who are thinking about joining the program."

Sometimes it all works out. After months of waiting for the snow to clear and rainy clouds to depart, It all paid off in the form of a beautiful sunny day that finally happened to fall on our family portrait shoot. I couldn't have asked for better weather, lighting or more photogenic little models.

Being engaged and planning a wedding makes for a very stressful and exciting time in a couple’s life. I have been there. All the planning, the registering, the envelope licking... did I mention the planning? Somehow it all turns life into a roller coaster. Simply put, being engaged is nothing short of a beautiful mess. This is why I enjoy doing engagements shoots. I get to work with two people that are crazy in love, just about the happiest they have ever been and have nothing but hope for their future together (plus they may have recently realized how many presents they are getting). As you can imagine, to the engaged couple’s benefit, this all translates nicely to great photographs.
In conclusion, apart from my views and experiences with the engaged, I would like to impart some sage wisdom to them in the form of ingredients to a successful engagement:

1. Future grooms, She is not as lucky as you are; behave and let her do the deciding. All you need to do is what she asks you to.
2. Future brides, All you need to know is that you are not as lucky as he is but hey, it’s your day.
3. Have fun and know that life gets even better.
4. ...Oh, and don’t forget to hire a good photographer :).

The Simple Life

One time or another you may have thought or said: "I miss the simple life" while thinking of a time when things were less complicated. I know I have. Everyone has a "simple life" memory from sometime in their existence. When thinking of mine, I always relate back to summer break back in elementary school where I had no worries or responsibilities other than a strict commitment to playing, exploring, and eating as much gummy bears as I could. I hope this photo can help you remember your "simple life" as well as it does mine.

Glaring Back

I have been told that for the most part I am an easy going person. This bird however, seemed to think otherwise. Maybe his irritation originated from me sticking my camera in his face or perhaps I simply interrupted an afternoon nap. All I know is that he didn't hate me enough to leave so naturally the shooting continued.
